During the lockdown a corona think tank in Belgium was created to help solve some of the issues surrounding the coronavirus pandemic such as: how to teach people to create their own mouth masks, curing loneliness during lockdown, and even creating a place for people to mourn the loss of loved ones due to the virus. One such project was "Wij leren mee". It was a project set up by people in education trying to figure out how to help pupils learn at home.
I learnt about this initiative via my teacher at Synta West as he mentioned they were looking for volunteers to help in any way possible. Considering my background in teaching, and the fact I was stuck at home during lockdown and studying illustration, I decided to join in.
The idea was to create a series of short clips and bring educational topics to primary school children. It was even pitched to a TV studio. In the end, lockdown finished and the corona think tank was no longer needed before the project had been completed. Despite the project being cancelled, I learnt a lot of valuable skills such as how to cooperate and coordinate with other people online (via Zoom and Slack), and even sharpened my skills as an illustrator.
For the first video clip the theme was how to grow your own plants and vegetables at home. Based on the script I helped come up with a storyboard.
The characters were mostly inanimate objects and to make them more appealing I added cute little faces to some of the objects. The style of the characters was determined by the team I was working with.
I also drew the backgrounds for some of the scenes all in Adobe Illustrator.
